Regarding the previous post, my friend Todd asks:

Isn’t “His mom, recognizing an excellent photo opportunity, had stuck an American flag in his hand” a tad cynical? I mean, I get that this experience is custom-built to engender cynicism, but it still seems like you’re still imputing motivation.

Sure, I can see how this reads a bit cynically, and no, that wasn’t entirely my intent. Rather, I wanted to point out that just like everyone else, this boy’s mother attended the in order to broadcast her opinion — that is, after all, the entire point of protests. These weren’t some naive people on their way to church — this was a family that came to the event to make a statement, and who did an excellent job of it, considering how often photos of this kid pop up in news coverage of the event.
