hemlockrecords asked: what personal creative projects are you currently working on?
Since June I’ve been doing nothing but standup, and it’s been an absolute blast. Standup is, I think, the most difficult form of comedy, but it’s also the most intense and rewarding. It requires constant work and attention — doing it any less than daily is a waste of time — but the thrill of making an audience laugh using nothing but a microphone, your voice, and your ideas is something that you really can’t get anywhere else. Bombing is inevitable and awful, but killing is a straight shot of social approval right to the lizard brain, addictive enough to keep me coming back even when I’m sucking. And there are so many ways to succeed and fail on stage — was my writing too unclear? My body language too distracting? How did I fail to connect? — that learning to do it well is a really satisfying, meaty problem; every day there’s something new to work on. It’s a tough hill to climb, but I’m having a ton of fun tackling it.
