The CollegeHumor All Nighter has begun! We’ll be making videos — twelve in twelve hours! — and live streaming from the office all night long. I’ll be tottering around in the background of everything, sleepily and occasionally drunkly. (I’ve already hung out on the live stream for an hour and been berated by commenters for having a crotch that looks like a cameltoe.) Here’s something I co-wrote with Adam Conover. John Mayer is a terrific sport. Also featuring the always funny Josh Ruben and Ben “Ka-ka do-do” Rameaka.

This sketch was a ton of fun to work on and came out great. It’s one thing to privately joke for years that John Mayer and Jack Johnson are comically similar; it’s quite another to get to make that joke to John Mayer’s face.

A few weeks ago my remarkable girlfriend Lisa and I went to check out the International Beauty Show at the Javitz convention center. I’ve always loved trade shows, and this one turned out to be especially nuts, so we came back the next day with a camera and made a short video of us goofing around on the convention floor.

Lisa is absolutely hilarious, and collaborating with her on this was an incredible ton of fun. Check it out and enjoy!

Owen, Adam, Pat, and Dan laughing at pretty much the funniest thing ever by Dan, Kelly, and Arthur.

No kidding. They made a fake menu for a restaurant called FUDS and it made me cry laughing. I can’t wait until it exists in Internet form so I can share it with you all.

I cannot tell a lie, this fake menu was one of the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. The entire staff wasted half a writing meeting just taking turns reading fake menu items out loud. I recognize that this post is nothing but a colossal tease, but you’ll just have to live with it until their upload this sucker and it goes viral like some kind of virus. Arthur, Kelly and Dan continue to be the funniest ever.

Also, yes, the new job is a lot of fun.

The Exquisite Corpse Project: Director Ben Popik brings together five comedy writers, and surprises them with a challenge: to each write fifteen pages of a movie, having read only the previous five pages of the script. They agree with one stipulation: if they write the movie, he has to make it. For your vintage feel-good cry of the day — On Cheers, Coach tries to talk his daughter out of marrying a man who doesn’t love her.

I think Conover showed me this scene like a year ago, and even without the context of the rest of the episode it’s incredibly powerful. Sincerity is the hardest thing to pull off in comedy and a lot of shows don’t even try. Or they do try and it feels cheap and unearned. But when a comedy dares to just not be funny for a few minutes, and when they pull it off, it’s like nothing else.

Scenes like this one — this is what television is for.

This makes me cry every time. And to think that this was just the fifth episode of the first season! Cheers defines hitting the ground running.

We are unlikely to cease making gods or inventing ceremonies to please them for as long as we are afraid of death, or of the dark, and for as long as we persist in self-centeredness. That could be a lengthy stretch of time. However, it is just as certain that we shall continue to cast a skeptical and ironic and even witty eye on what we have ourselves invented.

Look, I’m no big Christopher Hitchens expert — I came across this line in a summary of what his friends said about him at his memorial service — but this sentiment struck me just right. The central claim of an atheist (an atheist like me, anyway) isn’t “There is no God!”; it’s that unlike chemistry or the speed of light, the notion of God is itself a man-made thing, an idea that wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for people. And that means it should be treated as such: we get to talk about it, make fun of it, play with it, or get bored of it — and it means that believing in it isn’t any better than not believing in it. Believing is just a Thing People Do.

I swear I will never get tired of this joke.
